Kinesio-Tape was developed over two decades ago by a Japanese chiropractor, Kenzo Kase, D.C., but it was in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics that it gained worldwide recognition and popularity.
Certified Kinesio-Taping Practitioner (CKTP), LifeSource Health & Wellness believes that Kinesio-Taping is one of the most effective techniques to treat overuse injuries in athletes today. Kinesio-Tape is fundamentally different from conventional sports tape, which limit range of motion and circulation by restricting movement of the affected muscle and joints.
When Kinesio-Tape is highly elastic and when adhered to the skin, it lifts the tissue away from the injured area and fascia, allowing blood to flow properly and alleviating swelling, improves range of motion of the injured muscle & joint, thus facilitating the healing process.
Cornerstones of the Kinesio® Taping Method:
- Taping over and around muscles in order to assist and give support or to prevent over-contraction.
- Applying stretch to the tape or to the target area in order to create space under the skin and create the desired effect on the musculature.
- Affecting change in deeper layers of fascia by manipulating the skin and muscle.
- Creating space underneath the skin to improve circulation and lymphatic drainage.
- Utilizing a number of corrective techniques to promote correct muscle and joint function
- Pain relief by targeting the pain and the source of the pain
- Utilizing single “I” strips or modifications in the shape of an “X,” “Y” or other specialized shapes
- Applying base of tape with no tension to create pull towards the base
